Things to do
Yorkshire has a wealth of attractions, from outstanding natural beauty to the grandeur of England’s finest stately homes. Otterington Park is well situated to enjoy them all. Within 30 minutes’ driving time are the National Parks of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.
Northallerton the county town of North Yorkshire lies just 5 miles to the north, with its bustling twice weekly markets and excellent array of high class shops. The market town of Thirsk is 6 miles to the south, with its vast cobbled market square and world famous ‘James Herriot Centre’. The historic city of Ripon,‘Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales’, is 12 miles away, with its fine cathedral and architecture. A little further afield lies the city of York, steeped in history, with its majestic, medieval cathedral, Jorvik Centre and National Railway Museum and the spa town of Harrogate with its Victorian stone buildings, Royal Baths, open grassed commons and flowerbeds.
Castle Howard, with 1000 acre grounds, two lakes and fountains, Newby Hall and 25 acre gardens, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Garden and Ripley Castle provide a variety of further attractions close by.
For an exciting day out with the children the theme parks of Lightwater Valley and Flamingo Land are close by. And don’t forget Mother Shiptons Cave at Knaresborough or the visitor centre at the top of Sutton bank.
For the sporting enthusiasts there is horse racing at both Ripon and Thirsk as well as Catterick, Wetherby, York and Sedgefield. For the fishermen, apart from our own private fishing lake there are several lakes and some river fishing spots available locally. Lovely local golf courses are on the doorstep at Thirsk, Romanby, Bedale and Ripon. Cycling is very popular in the area with the 2014 Tour de France passing very close by and last year the Tour de Yorkshire. Walking is as popular as ever, whether a stroll close by or a visit to the Moors or Dales.
